Kate Courtnage grew up in Harley. A farm girl at heart, she has always loved animals, rural living and has a sense of adventure. After high school ,she went out west to explore other parts of Canada and spend time with her sister. Harley eventually called her home, so she packed herself and her six month old puppy – aptly named ‘Harley’ in her car and drove across the country.
Once back in the area, Kate knew her love for animals and their care was in her blood. She entered Dogport Academy out of Woodstock early last year and began her training to become a certified dog groomer. COVID waylaid her plans slightly but she recently graduated her studies with a near perfect grade.
“I would highly recommend Dogport Academy” says Kate “we learned it all, we worked with many breeds of dogs and covered the entire grooming process. We also learned all the pros and cons of opening a dog grooming salon.” Kate’s training was hands – on, allowing her to work with a variety of tools, breeds and scenarios. “Dogport Academy really prepared us to run a business and work with animals” she explains.
Kate has just finished a significant renovation that allows her to open her own dog grooming salon “Harley’s Hounds” in her home. The space has been expertly converted, with a bathing and grooming station, plenty of space, and all the supplies needed to properly care for all of her canine clients. The salon has a bright, fresh feel and provides the sense that Kate is well trained and ready to launch her business.
Kate has plenty of experience with dogs, she has two of her own, including the beloved – Harley, a Boxer-Rottweiler. She has also been grooming for quite some time and knows the struggles and joys of working with animals.
“I love animals” she confesses. “I have two dogs, two cats, a parrot and an enormous fish tank. I love working with and being surrounded by animals.”
Harley’s Hounds officially opened its doors on Tuesday October 13, and is now available for appointments. “I also do cats” says Kate, showing off the equipment she has to offer full service and care.
“I want people to know that I’m local, I love animals and I understand how dogs get muddy running through the fields and how farm and rural life works, I’ve been here my whole life and I want to cater to my community.”
Kate hopes to offer a few speciality clinics such as monthly nail clipping days. She currently offers full grooming services such as trims and shaves, nail clippings, shampoos and much more. She is located in Harley and has the perfect spot to give your dog (or cat) the best treatment and care.
