Letter to Rural Harley

Submitted by: Mary Leroux

To my customers, friends and neighbours on Rural Route 1,2,3 Harley:
I am writing this message with bittersweet feelings to announce my retirement as your mail carrier after 35 plus years.
I will surely miss all the people on my route, the opportunity to see the changing seasons each day, the mailbox conversations and nature at its best and at its worst.
I want to thank everyone who gave me generous cards and gifts at Christmas, birthdays and just to say ‘thank you.’ It has been an amazing experience through the years; some days more amazing than others.
Despite hail, sleet, snow and vehicle breakdowns (consistently) it has been fun along the way. In the last few years the job has been altered somewhat to a delivery parcel service. A dear customer jokingly said “you are now a gun runner (legal delivery of guns to my hunters), a bootlegger (legal delivery of wine and beer) and a drug carrier (legal delivery of medical cannabis).”
It has been an adventure! Over the years I have delivered baby chicks, live bees encased in hives and good old Sears Catalogues.
Thanks for the memories everybody and perhaps in my spare time I’ll write a book to share my experiences!
Stay safe and healthy.
PS. I hope to have an open house in the spring to say a proper ‘goodbye’ and bring the community together once more.
Your devoted mail carrier, neighbour and community friend,
Mary Leroux
