We need your feedback on Additional Residential Units (ARUs) in the County of Brant
Calling all County of Brant residents – we need your feedback!
Additional residential units (ARUs) are dwelling units that come in many shapes and sizes and are commonly referred to as basement apartments, granny flats, coach homes, in-law suites, tiny homes, garage apartments, etc.
ARUs can have many benefits, including increasing rental units available, providing opportunities for rental income, and providing housing for family or friends who may need extra care.
Municipalities are required to provide a diverse range and mix of housing types and ownership styles. This is where additional residential units (ARUs) can make a difference.
The County’s current policies limit creating a new ARU to:
• A property that has full municipal servicing (water and sanitary) capacity available; and
• An existing dwelling where the unit can be established wholly within (such as a basement apartment)
As these requirements mean that 57% of County households do not have direct access to these housing options, staff are looking for input to find ways to broaden permissions and increase the ARU housing stock in the County of Brant.
Get involved and help us make changes to these policies. Public feedback is one of the best ways to have policies in place that reflect our community and the needs of our residents.
